The best way to measure the golf driver shaft length is by holding the club at 45 degrees like it seems you are in playing position then you measure it. it will give you the legal value which will main USGA regulation
There are many aspects that go into finding the right driver shaft length, and today we will focus on the new USGA regulations. Most people don’t realize that there has been a change to this rule in regards to the legal driver lengths over 48″ inches.
What is the USGA?
United States Golf Association (USGA) is an organization for all things golf in America, from minis to the pros. The organization was created in December 1894, making it one of the oldest sports associations in North America.
The United States Golf Association has many jobs with different tasks, but one of their main rules is in regards to driver length.
The New Legal Driver Length in Golf
In the past, you could have a driver longer than 48″ inches as long as it was not adjustable. In 2013, this rule has changed, and now drivers must be under 48″ inches when measured from the bottom of the grip end including any added weighting material.
If you are using an adjustable driver, it must be at the lowest setting. Before the USGA change in 2013, a standard driver could measure 46″ inches or more when the weighting was included.
What is a non-conforming driver?
This means that any legally produced club for sale with a length of over 48″ inches is now non-conforming. One example of a conforming driver would be your standard drive or 3 wood with a shaft length under the USGA regulation at 38″ inches including any weighting material.
The best and more legal driver lengths
This article isn’t just to inform you that you must have a shorter driver, but we want to inform you of the best golf driver shaft lengths for all types of players.
Men’s drivers should be at least 45″ inches in length
This is one of the most common legal options and 45″ inches can be considered as an average men’s driver length. The USGA sets this standard because it is unlikely that they will face any issues with this length.
Women’s drivers should be shorter than the standard driver length of 44″ inches
This is just a few inches short of the average men’s driver length, but this is what you need to look for in your lady golfer if she wants to have legal equipment on the course. A slightly shorter driver will not make much difference when it comes to accuracy and distance.
Experienced golfer drivers should be between 44-46″ inches in length.
Recently USGA reduce the maximum length of driver shafts from 48 to 46 inches.
An experienced golfer is one who hits the ball far, so finding a club with this driver length will help them keep all their drives under the USGA regulation of 46″ inches. The only drawback to using a shorter driver shaft length when you are an experienced player is that it can be hard to hit the ball high in the air.
Children drivers should be 36″ inches in length
Here at playgolf24, we realize that children don’t always play like adults, and all their clubs need to reflect this. A shorter driver won’t make much of a difference to children, but it will make the game more enjoyable for them.
